The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mrs Jean Adukwei Mensa has stated that the Commission has no intentions of compiling a new electoral register.

According to her, they are only seeking to make the register more credible for subsequent elections with their new policy.

Answering questions in Parliament yesterday, she said, ” There was a question as to whether we are preparing a new register,  I would like to assure this honourable house that the Commission does not intend to prepare a new register.”

She said what the EC is seeking to do with the continuous registration is to update the register by bringing on board people who have turned 18 of age or those who are not previously registered.

“Under the new C.I., anyone who turns 18 can simply walk into any of our district offices and register to vote. This is a departure from the previous one. The main advantage of this is that potential voters can register anytime any day. Eligible persons will be at liberty to do it at their leisure because it will be an all-year-round activity.”

Jean Mensa further added that the new policy, through the introduction of a new C.I.  is seeking to eliminate the guarantor system by resorting to only Ghana Card will ensure the credibility and integrity of the register.

She said it is public knowledge that many minors and foreigners use the door of the guarantor to come into the system.

This, she said will ultimately ensure the credibility and integrity of Ghana’s Elections.
