NPP grants Dr. Bawumia’s request for more time to choose running mate
Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party for election 2024, Dr.Mahamudu Bawumia has requested more time to choose his running mate.
Dr.Bawumia was expected to present the name of his running mate to the National Council of the party for consideration today, December 7, 2023.
The party’s constitution usually requires the vice presidential candidate to be chosen one year before elections.
However, the presentation of the running mate did happen today after Dr.Bawumia met the National Council.
Speaking to the media at National Council meeting on Thursday, the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong said, “Per the interpretation of our party’s constitution, today should have been the day that Dr.Bwwumia who is the leader of the party present his running mate to the National Council for considering.”
“In line with our constitution, particularly about article 13 (32)- ‘the vice presidential candidate shall be a known and active member at least five years and shall be nominated by the presidential candidate at least 12 months before general elections when the party is not in government or the president is not the candidate.’
This notwithstanding, he said Dr.Bawumia has appealed to the party for more time to allow him to consult wider before proposing his running mate.
Justin Kodua said the request for ample time was premised on the fact that the party just held its primaries on November 4.
The General Secretary further added that the party’s National Council unanimously agreed to Dr. Bawumia’s request.
