Spanish Embassy holds wine show in Accra

The Spanish Embassy in Ghana, through its Economic and Commercial Office, has organised this year’s edition of the Spanish Wine Show in Accra.

This year’s event, which took place at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra, is the seventh edition and forms part of efforts by the Spanish Embassy in Accra through its affiliates to strengthen the commercial and economic bond between Ghana and Spain.

Dubbed, “Wines from Spain: Spirits of Spain,” the annual event brought together a great variety of Spain’s beverages, such as still wine, sparkling wine, beer, vermouth, and other alcoholic beverages.

Besides the wine tasting, the event also focused on enhancing educational and sensory experiences linked to wine and other beverages and, perhaps most importantly, the various grape varieties and other products grown in Spain, as well as their geographical distribution.

Following the exhibition, Miguel Casero, Head of the Economic and

Commercial Office at the Spanish Embassy, emphasised the importance of the wine sector in Spain, the world’s third-largest wine-producing country.

He acknowledged the positive trend in the demand for Spanish wine in Ghana over the years.

“The numbers said that Ghana is very important for Spain. For example, Ghana is the fourth country that exports the most wine in all of Africa, and Ghana accounts for almost 10 per cent of the total wine exports of Spain to Africa. So, this is a sense of the importance, the current situation, and the current awareness of Spanish wines here in Ghana,” Mr. Casero said.

He added that “there have been some positive trends in the last few years. For example, from 2019 to 2020, there was an increase of 40 per cent in wine exports, and from 2020 to 2021, there was an increase of seven per cent. So, you can see there is some positive trend, and we see that more and more Ghanaians are becoming aware of and enjoying Spanish wines.”

He commended Ghanaian importers, wholesalers, retailers, and the press for promoting Spanish

Since 2015, the Economic and Commercial Office has been successfully organising wine tastings for professionals in the hospitality industry, with more than 80 professionals attending each year, and this year was no exception.

The trade show offered more than 70 different products, including wine, beer, vermouth, and other alcoholic beverages from Spain, with the collaboration of three Ghanaian importers and eight Spanish wineries and beverage companies.
