The Inspiration Behind Brandon Washington’s New Movie “Dream”

Many young filmmakers may draw inspiration from Netflix and would be ecstatic to be invited to a Netflix event. To be asked to create a film for the company, however, is an honor that few will ever be blessed with.

Brandon Washington is a film writer/director based in Los Angeles, California. Washington, aka Writer Boy, currently produces all of his films under his studio Writer Boy Films and also operates a talent agency that connects young actors and models to companies and brands for work. Based in Los Angeles, his studio houses 25 full time employees and contractors.

For the last few years, he has written short film parodies for Netflix Dreams and written commercials for Google, BET, and Burger King. Now he has his eyes set on his own feature film, “Dream.”

“Dream” is a riveting tale of a boy growing up in the foster care system. Although the odds are stacked against him, he has a dream that keeps him going – he wants to be a writer. Washington explained his inspiration for the film. “I wanted something that was inspirational. ”Dream” is a story of perseverance, hope and humanity.” We were able to watch the trailer for his film and we were hooked. When we asked what his inspiration was, he blurted out, “Jesus! Literally, I am nothing without him, don’t move without him, don’t write without him.” He continued to explain that some of his other inspirations were Tyler Perry and Spike Lee. While it would be easy to focus on their accomplishments in the industry, he was less focused on their achievements and more on their journey. “Starting from nothing. Sleeping in the car until the made it, being wholly independent and not joining networks… that inspires me.”

With such men as his inspiration, you would think that his goal is to build wealth or be famous. If you thought that, you’d be wrong. We asked Washington what he viewed as success and his answer was simple. He wanted to inspire people. “I want to make people think differently. I want to give them hope.” While this may seem like a cliched answer, he backed up this statement with a genuine and humble attitude through the interview. He was friendly, but his eyes always lit up the most when talking about how he wanted his movies to impact the world.

While he hopes to produce many more feature films, he currently is only focused on releasing “Dream.” With an anticipated release date in the beginning of 2022, he and his team is busy finalizing the film that will premiere on Fandago, Amazon Prime, and Hulu.
