The Ghana Women Bloggers last Saturday held its maiden annual convention of women writers, authors, bloggers and technology enthusiasts in Accra.

The event was aimed at highlighting the growing demand for content writers and creators, and the need for young women and girls to pick up digital skills such as blogging in order to have access to the various opportunities in the technology space.

The Keynote Speaker, Mrs Petra Aba Asamoah, stresssed the need for telling positive stories about Ghanaian women.

According to her, “telling stories from a negative perspective prevents people from getting value from their culture and traditions”.

Madam Justica Anima, Co-founder of Green Arts Culture, also noted that the event was initiated during a discussion on how women could be supported to pick up digital skills for the future.

She stated that the misconception that blogging or technology was a male dominated space must be demystified.

“As women, most of us are natural writers, therefore we can also take up that space and carve a niche for ourselves,” she added.

Madam Anima admitted that a lot of success stories about women were not highlighted enough to inspire other women to take up audacious tasks, therefore the initiative would “spark a drive for telling positive stories of the Ghanaian woman”.

The event, organised by Green Arts Culture, on the theme: “Telling the African Woman’s narrative through tech,” was attended by students from the Ghana Institute of Journalism, Accra Girls’ Senior High School and scores of young women writers and bloggers from various institutions.

Participants were taken through various aspects of blogging such as building and maintaining a brand (blog), marketing, operations, brand visibility and copyright laws surrounding the profession.
