Former West Ham defender John Paintsil advises Kudus to prioritise team success

Former West Ham United defender John Paintsil has shared his insights on Mohammed Kudus’ high-profile transfer to the Premier League, urging the 23-year-old attacking midfielder to prioritise team success over individual accolades.

Kudus realised his dream of joining the Premier League ranks, as he put pen to paper on a five-year contract, finalising his move from Ajax to West Ham.

The talented 23-year-old’s reputation has been on the rise, thanks to his remarkable performance last season, where he netted an impressive 18 goals for Ajax. His stellar form has persisted into the current season, including a recent standout performance where he secured a hat-trick in the Europa League against Ludogorets. West Ham’s pursuit of Kudus was backed by a significant investment, reportedly surpassing the 40 million euros mark.

Interestingly, Kudus has opted for the number 14 shirt, a jersey that holds sentimental value as it was previously worn by none other than Paintsil during his stint with West Ham United.

Reflecting on Kudus’ move, Paintsil shared his perspective during an interview on Kumasi-based Akoma FM, stating, “Kudus Mohammed shouldn’t focus solely on winning individual awards even though they are important, but I will rather encourage him to do well at West Ham.” He continued, “He shouldn’t be about playing at West Ham to win or even think about the African Best Player award but play well and at the right time, it will come.”

Kudus could debut for West Ham in their Premier League clash against Luton Town on Friday.
