Misapplication: …mosquito nets catch fish in rural communities

Anti-malaria mosquito nets are being used for several purposes including fishing in some rural communities as seen in these photographs.

The mosquito nets are usually used to catch the smaller fishes which may reduce their stock in the rivers in the near future.

Distributed mosquito nets are intended to be used for malaria control yet some deprived communities use them for fishing.

Several organisations have invested in finding solutions to issue of malaria by distributing hundreds of thousands of bed nets to protect people from mosquito bites.

The treated nets which repel mosquitoes have played a huge role in protecting us especially children under five years.

Though the use of mosquito nets for fishing is not a new phenomenon, its negative impact on the river and fishing industry is huge.

The use of anti-malaria mosquito nets for fishing should be checked to protect the smallest fishes from depletion in our rivers.
