Man dies in attempt to retrieve GH₵300 from abandoned well

An attempt by a 22 year old man to retrieve GH¢300.00 from an abandoned well has resulted in his death.

The deceased, Bright OwoaheneAcheampong, popularly called AkwasiBroni, had entered the well to retrieve the money which dropped from his mother in the course of throwing garbage into the well.

The incident which happened at Meduma in the Kwabre East District of the Ashanti Region, sent chills down the spines of the residents on June 14,2022.

Timely intervention by some personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) helped in the rescue of another person who attempted to save the deceased but also ended up trapped in the pit.

The Ashanti Regional Commander of the GNFS, Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO), Mr Henry Giwah, confirmed the incident to The Spectator saying that the abandoned well had become a dumping site after the contractors had failed to get water.

Meanwhile, this paper has gathered that the deceased was cautioned by his mother not to attempt to get into the pit to retrieve the cash but her warning fell on deaf ears.

According to eyewitnesses the mother who was preparing to go to church, had to call for help from neighbours when her son’s screams drew her attention to the incident.

The deceased is said to be an old student of the Kumasi Technical Institute.
